HiiBo

An AI chat app for beginners, built before ChatGPT figured out memory, with a friendly robot named Bo who had a cute but slightly dystopian personality.

The Problem

In early 2024, AI chat tools had a memory problem. You'd have a great conversation, hit the context limit, and suddenly the AI forgot everything you'd discussed. Start a new chat? Back to square one. It was like talking to someone with amnesia.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT cost $20/month. Fine for tech workers in the US, but out of reach for students, freelancers, and anyone outside the US dollar economy. And the interfaces? Built by engineers for engineers. No guidance, no guardrails, just a blank text box and good luck.

We'd been running Cloudfruit since 2022, but we wanted to build something of our own from start to finish. An AI assistant that remembered you, cost less than a latte, and didn't make beginners feel stupid.

What We Built

HiiBo was an AI chat platform designed for people who weren't already AI power users. Friendly interface, transparent pricing, and a memory system that actually worked.

Hydration (The Core Innovation)

  • Intelligent summarization when approaching context limits
  • Seamlessly transfers context to a new session
  • Looks like one continuous conversation to the user
  • Manual or automatic trigger, so the user stays in control

Personal Thread

  • Dedicated thread that stores your preferences, tone, and goals
  • AI remembers how you like to communicate
  • Persists across all conversations

Prompt Library

  • Save and organize your best prompts
  • Quick reuse via keyword triggers
  • Stop rewriting the same instructions

Prompt Wizard

  • Guided prompt crafting for beginners
  • Tooltips and suggestions throughout
  • Learn prompting by doing, not reading docs

LLM Switcher

  • Switch between GPT-4o Mini, Claude 3 Haiku, DeepSeek
  • Per-thread model selection
  • Keep your context even when switching vendors

Cost Transparency

  • Real-time token usage display
  • Estimated cost per conversation
  • No surprise bills, ever

Bo, the Mascot

  • Friendly robot with a cute but dystopian personality
  • Made AI feel approachable, not intimidating
  • Guided users through onboarding and features

The $5/Month Bet

We priced HiiBo at $5/month, one quarter of ChatGPT Plus. The thesis was simple: students shouldn't have to choose between AI tools and groceries, and international users shouldn't be priced out of the AI revolution.

By using efficient models (GPT-4o Mini, Claude Haiku) and serverless infrastructure, we kept costs low enough to make the math work. Cost transparency wasn't just a feature. It was how we built trust with users who'd been burned by subscription creep.

What Happened

400+ Waitlist signups
3 LLM integrations
$5 Monthly price

We built HiiBo from scratch, launched a soft release, and got real users testing it. The waitlist grew to 400+ people. The product worked. The architecture was solid.

Then ChatGPT shipped memory.

Our core differentiator, persistent context across sessions, became a checkbox feature for the incumbent. We spent months looking for funding and a new angle, but the honest truth is: we solved a problem that OpenAI solved better, with more resources, shortly after we shipped.

We shut down HiiBo and went back to client work. The tech, the lessons, and the battle scars came with us.

What We Learned

  • Timing matters. Building on platform gaps is risky. Platforms close gaps.
  • Ship fast. We did. It still wasn't fast enough.
  • Infrastructure compounds. The AWS architecture we built for HiiBo now powers client projects.
  • Failure is data. We know exactly how to build, launch, and scale an AI product now. That's worth something.

Building something in AI?

We've shipped AI products, integrated LLMs, and learned what works the hard way. Let's talk about your project.
